What's wrong with the western view on menopause and female ageing?

Sarah Curran

Western society has a troubling view on ageing and I've felt it for a while.  We've long been obsessed with young and sexy, but the increase in 20 something's up and their uptake in procedures such as botox and fillers, needs to be the wake up call that it's getting out of control.

We don't have to fall into the belief that being menopausal or over 50, somehow makes us 'unsexy' or unattractive.  I don't care if men find me attractive, I only care how I feel about myself.  And this has been an awakening.  I'm 50 and happy, not to say that I don't need to constantly talk myself down from feeling shit.

Negativity and Stereotyping: Overall, women in western countries tend to view menopause negatively, associating it with the loss of fertility and youth. This contrasts with some non-western cultures where menopause is seen in a more positive light, as a natural phase in a woman's life.

Societal Associations with Ageing: In Western societies, menopause is often associated with ageing, whereas non-western countries view menopause as a beautiful time of change. The emphasis on youth and beauty in many Western societies can result in women feeling devalued or invisible as they age and undergo menopause.

In conclusion

Let's not be pigeonholed by society that tries to tell us ageing is bad, and that being 50 means we should sit down quietly and get our knitting out.  No one puts baby in the corner!!!
